Although acne is commonly thought of as a problem of adolescence, it can occur in men and women of all ages. Some adults continue struggling with acne breakouts well into their 50's while others experience acne for the first time as an adult. Hormones

  • Birth control medications alter hormone levels which can cause acne. This is common after first starting birth control and after discontinuing it.

  • Acne is common for peri-menopausal, menopausal, and post-menopausal women as hormone levels change. As ovaries decrease the amount of estrogen and progesterone produced, a variety of uncomfortable and frustrating symptoms are experienced including acne.

  • Adult women often experience acne with their menstrual cycle as several hormones rise and fall throughout the cycle.

  • While adult acne is more common in women, men experience it too as estrogen and testosterone levels change with age. Facial shaving also lends itself to the acne breakouts as hair follicles get trapped in pores.


Stress

When we experience periods of stress, our bodies respond with the production of hormones. These hormones, called androgens, can stimulate oil glands in the skin. The overactive oil glands cause sticky, clogged pores and the conditions are prime for acne. This explains why acne is a constant battle during times of stress.


Hair and Skincare Products

Lotions, creams, and cleansers for the face and hair often contain oils which cause pores to become clogged. While many aging adults select oil-based products to increase moisture and reduce skin wrinkling, the oils can also cause sticky, congested pores followed by the dreaded appearance of whiteheads and blackhead. Check your product labels for ingredients that are "pore-friendly", specifically look for terms such as "oil-free" or "won't clog pores".


Medications

Acne is a side effect of some medications. Antibiotics, antidepressants, and birth control are among the most common.
